Clairton Hardware might look like a small mom and pop store where neighbors can buy nails and paint, but actually it is a major industrial supplier. While small in size - 25 feet by 100 feet - the wooden floored store has seen its share of changes over the years. We dont sell a lot of anything; we sell a little bit of a lot of things. When you walk in the door its a virtual merchandise mania. Customers have an enormous selection merchandise that fills the walls, top to bottom. Even the ceiling is chop full of stock. Its amazing a small store can hold so much. Ron Vaccari (owner) considers himself and the staff space engineers, for their ability to fit everything in. Arch Vaccari bought the business in 1943. At that time, customers could walk in and buy anything from hardware, paints, and house-wares to gifts, appliances, and toys. First-time customers will easily find the store, with its huge, hand-made, red, stainless steel letters that, for five decades, have screamed Clairton Hardware, a Real Hardware Store. The sign further upholds the family tradition that drips from the walls inside. Arch brought sons Ed, Anthony, and Ron to work in the store. Anthony went on to form Vaccari Enterprises; Ed opened Tackle Unlimited and Ron found his future in the fathers business. He bought Clairton Hardware from his father in 1980. My father has fostered three successful business men, Ron said. He did however, more than double the amount of tools and industrial items in stock. The change was designed to move the business toward becoming industrial supply specialists. You cant be all things to all people anymore, Ron said. With that in mind, the business has become more specialized and draws a large ustomer base. He estimates that 70 percent of his business comes from industrial sales. Many of those clients come searching for his odd items - like drill bits 80 sizes smaller than ¼ inch, 4-foot pipe wrenches, 2-foot crescent wrenches, and 3-foot screwdrivers.
